In 2017 my mother-in-law gave me a quilt for Christmas. I think she made 5 or 6 quilts as Christmas gifts that year, maybe more. She wanted each of us to have something special and lasting from her.
Each quilt she made also came with a storage bag made from some of the same fabric used in quilt. Each bag had a label with the recipient’s name, her name, and the year.
After she made those Christmas gifts, she kept right on making quilts for people she cared about. She made another quilt for me that normally adorns the back of our sofa (unless it is needed to snuggle under during a movie).
Sadly, my mother-in-law passed away couple of years ago. Near that same time, my sister-in-law’s house burnt to the ground. Among the many things she lost were the quilts that her mother made for her. I knew that the quilts we received in 2017 were not exactly alike, but they did have similarities. I gave her my quilt from that year. I still have the storage bag with my name, my mother-in-law’s name, and the year on it. And I still have the quilt that adorns the back of my sofa. At some point, I will get the scraps from my mother-in-law’s fabric stash and I will make something out of the scraps from my quilt. I will probably make a throw pillow. My mother-in-law loved her throw pillows.
Receiving that first quilt inspired me. It took a few years for the inspiration to hit, but it did hit.
